Plenty to do on
the doorstep
Here at Locmaria there's the swimming pool and sun terrasse and there are plenty
of quiet spots tucked away around the grounds - with benches in some of our favourite
spots for a relaxing with a book and a drink. We're happy for children to explore
the fields, woods and stream but suggest you supervise the young ones - the top
field is great for kite flying and there's plenty of room for ball games (including
Boules!). The Lac du Dordu half a mile away has a children's playground, exercise
circuit and a lakeside bar.
Walking
Brittany is perfect for those of you who enjoy walking, whatever your abilities.
You can take a leisurely walk through ancient forest, along tranquil rivers and
canals or perhaps through the pretty towns or villages with their flower-lined
streets. France boasts a national network of walking paths. As well as the GR34
Coastal path, there are many other "Grandes Randonnees" as they are
known, throughout Brittany , whose trail markers consist of red and white stripes
on trees, rocks, walls and posts. The GR314 hiking trail makes a complete circuit
of the spectacular Lac de Guerledan and there is a great walk that follows the
River Scorff from Langoëlan to Guéméné. A little further
afield there are great walks in the mysterious and ancient boulder-strewn forest
of Huelgoat .
Cycling
Brittany is an excellent region for cycling, thanks in part to its extensive
network of secondary and tertiary roads, most of which carry light traffic.
You can cycle along the beautiful forest trails in the ancient forest Foret
de Paimpont, with the very best views of the flora and fauna present on each
side of the specially adapted footpaths and forest tracks.
Watersports
Lac de Guerledan, where the waters of the Blavet form the stunning reservoir,
is a magnificent stretch of water, surrounded by trees. It is a lovely place
for watersports and boat trips, which are available on the lake. Beau Rivage
has the best watersports facilities and sailing centre. You can also hire
canoes to go down the Nantes-Brest canal in various locations. Serious canoeists
will find their pleasure at the Roches du Diable. Some of France 's most
well-known sailors have been based in the Golfe de Morbihan - and there are
plenty of places where you can hire boats of varying sizes.
Fishing
Brittany has some of the best fishing rivers and lakes in France , as well
as approximately 1/3 of France 's coastline. Fishing permits to cover the whole
of Brittany can be purchased for a two week or annual period. A two week permit
is only available between 1st June and 1st October. The River Scorff is a well-known
trout river and it flows out of the Lac du Dordu - day permits can be purchased
locally.
Horse Riding
There are plenty of places a short drive from Locmaria where you can go riding
- including a stunning ride on the hillsides and shores of the Lac de Guerledan.
Motor Biking
Brittany has some wonderful stretches of road and we will be very happy to
recommend daily rides out - through beautiful countryside either in central
Brittany or out towards the coast and always with somewhere great to stop
at lunchtime.
Historic towns & villages and pre-historic sites
There are many beautiful towns with both medieval and 17 th /18 th Century
buildings, cathedrals, castles etc - Vannes, Josselin, Locronan, Quimper
(Famous for its porcelaine), St Malo, Guérande (Famous for salt),
Pont Aven (Famous for artists such as Gaugin) and Auray are just a few of
the many that are within an hour or so of Locmaria. Brittany is also famous
for its religious architecture - and if you are interested in that then you
will find intricately carved Calvaires and Parish Clos all around. Going
even further back into history you will come across the many standing stones
(Menhirs) and burial chambers - Carnac is well worth a visit (go midweek)
but there are a lot of other sites to chose from.
Beautiful countryside and coastline
Brittany has a wonderful mixture of scenery - there are ancient forests like
Huelgoat, Paimpont and Brocéliande; River gorges and lakes like the
Lac de Guerledan, Gorges de Daoulas, Roches du Diable; Extensive coastline
from the sandy white beaches on the south coast via the wild and rocky Côte
Sauvage around the Point du Raz to the west and the stunning pink granite
coast and fishing towns of the north coast. There are also beautiful islands
not far off shore - Belle-Isle, Isles Glenan, Ile de Groix.
Family Days out
There are many attractions suitable for families - There are several working
museums that show Breton life at different periods of history - including
the nearby Forges des Salles and Poul Fetan. St Malo has a large aquarium
(and there are others around the coast) and there is a Zoo at Pont Scorff. |
